Beer drinking is a very Australian thing to do. And Australians have always been proud of their beers.
Victorians, particularly, have been proud of the stable of beers which traditionally were produced by Carlton & United Breweries (the company most recently owned as the anchor in the Fosters Group beer portfolio). The main of these beers are Carlton Draught (my dad's favourite beer), Victoria Bitter, and Fosters Lager (something was still popular and marketed in Australia in my late teens, so I would drink it still from time to time to remember being on the edge of 17).
Of course, there were others - Melbourne Bitter (which I think only my late uncle Paul would drink as beer of choice), Crown Lager, and so on.
I'm not drinking any of the Fosters product anymore. It is foreign owned, so I have chosen to drink beer which is owned by Australians.
Main choices right now are:
Coopers - South Australian and family owned still
Mountain Goat - brewed here in Richmond (had a couple of Goats last night)
Broo - all shares are mandated as Australian owned.
A few others out there as well - forgot which is the one which is 25% owned by Woolworths (not a bad thing as Woolworths is an Australian company with such a widely held local shareholding that it is unlikely it will ever be subject to foreign takeover).
But the point is that I am boycotting the foreign owned product, and sticking to Australian owned beer.
